The short answer: Cutting your exposure to sprays, solvents and undisclosed fragrance is a sensible, low-cost choice — especially indoors, where you spend most of your time. What the evidence supports is reduced exposure. What it does not support is any promise that a cleaning product will prevent, treat or cure a health condition. This page sticks to the first.

The Hidden Perils of Conventional Cleaners
Cleaning products are a mixed category, and it is worth being precise instead of sweeping. Depending on the product, you may be dealing with chlorine bleach, ammonia, solvents, quaternary ammonium disinfectants, or an undisclosed fragrance blend. Many of these are perfectly reasonable to use as directed. The honest concern is not that a single wipe of a counter will hurt you — it is cumulative, indoor, close-range exposure, and the fact that “fragrance” on a U.S. label can legally stand in for a blend you cannot see.
Two things are well established by primary sources. First, the U.S. EPA reports that “Americans, on average, spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors,” where “the concentrations of some pollutants are often 2 to 5 times higher than typical outdoor concentrations.” Second, NIEHS lists phthalates among the most common and well-studied endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and notes they are found in hundreds of products including fragrances — a gap we unpack in the fragrance loophole. NIEHS-supported research has reported associations between certain phthalate exposures and outcomes including preterm birth and ADHD-related behaviors. Those are population-level associations, not a prediction about you or a verdict on any specific product.
We are not going to tell you conventional cleaners cause cancer. We have not found a primary source that supports that as a general statement about household cleaning products, so we will not make it. What we will say is that VOCs from cleaning products contribute to indoor air pollution, and that irritation and worsened asthma symptoms are the well-documented short-term effects.
Longitudinal Study: The Hidden Risks of Cleaning Sprays
Svanes et al., 2018, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, followed roughly 6,000 adults from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey for about 20 years. It is the study everyone quotes. It is also the study everyone overstates, so here is what it actually reported, in its own numbers:
- FEV1 declined faster in women who cleaned. In the authors’ words: “As compared with women not engaged in cleaning (ΔFEV1 = −18.5 ml/yr), FEV1 declined more rapidly in women responsible for cleaning at home (−22.1; P = 0.01) and occupational cleaners (−22.4; P = 0.03).” That is a difference of roughly 3.6–3.9 mL per year.
- No significant effect in men. The paper states cleaning “was not significantly associated with lung function decline in men.”
- No association with airway obstruction. The paper also found no significant association with FEV1/FVC decline or airway obstruction.
You will see this study repeated online as “cleaning is as bad as smoking 20 cigarettes a day.” That comparison does not appear in the paper — it came from press coverage of the researchers’ public comments. We used to repeat it here. We have taken it out, because the published abstract does not support it and we would rather give you the real number than the viral one. The real number is still meaningful. It is just smaller, sex-specific, and observational: a cohort association, not proof that any particular bottle caused it.
Why Go Green? The Science of Safe Cleaning
Switching to green cleaning products isn’t just about environmental sustainability—it’s a proactive choice for your health. Green cleaners are formulated with natural ingredients that minimize exposure to harmful chemicals. But how do these alternatives stack up scientifically?
Reduced Chemical Exposure
The defensible case for a plant-based concentrate is simple and it is about exposure, not cures. A product without synthetic fragrance, without chlorine bleach, without ammonia and without solvents like 2-butoxyethanol puts fewer of those compounds into the air of a closed room. That is a straightforward statement about what is and is not in the bottle.
What we will not tell you is that this lowers your risk of asthma, or that it will make headaches go away. We looked for a primary source that would support that specific promise for a specific product and did not find one. Reduced exposure is the honest benefit. Anything beyond it is marketing.
Biodegradability
“Biodegradable” is a real property, but it is also a loosely policed word. In the U.S. the FTC’s Green Guides require that an unqualified “degradable” claim be substantiated by evidence the product breaks down within roughly one year after customary disposal, so treat any bottle making that claim without a qualifier with some scepticism — including ours, until you have read the label.
What we can say plainly about our own formulas: they are built on plant-derived surfactants rather than petroleum solvents, and we do not add chlorine bleach, ammonia, phosphates or synthetic fragrance. We will not put a number on wastewater or ecosystem outcomes, because we have not run that testing and we are not going to borrow someone else’s.
Do Plant-Based Cleaners Actually Work?
Yes for cleaning. No for disinfecting — and that distinction is the one most “natural cleaning” pages blur.
Cleaning means physically lifting soil, grease and residue off a surface. Surfactants do that, and plant-derived surfactants do it well. Disinfecting means killing a specified list of microorganisms to a specified log reduction, verified under EPA registration, with a stated contact time. Ecolosophy concentrates are not EPA-registered disinfectants and we do not claim they kill germs. Essential oils have documented antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies, but laboratory activity in a petri dish is not the same as a registered surface disinfectant in your kitchen, and we will not present it as if it were.

About Our Scents — And What We Will Not Claim
Our formulas use essential oils. They are there for two honest reasons: they smell good, and citrus oils are rich in limonene, a terpene solvent that genuinely helps dissolve fats and grease. That is chemistry, and it is why cold-pressed orange sits at the centre of Citrus Burst.
Everything else you may have read on this page previously — that eucalyptus clears congestion, that rosemary sharpens concentration, that lavender or sandalwood lowers stress, that citronella repels mosquitoes in a cleaning product — has been removed. Those claims were attached to references we could not verify, and several of them are medical claims that no cleaning product should be making. If you want a therapeutic effect from an essential oil, that is a conversation for a clinician.
Two things worth knowing, from primary sources, before anyone tells you “essential oil” means “safe”:
- Cats. The ASPCA notes that cats are especially sensitive to essential oils, that ingestion of significant quantities at concentration can cause gastrointestinal upset, central nervous system depression and liver damage, and that cats face added dermal risk because they groom. The ASPCA recommends not using essential oils where pets have unsupervised access unless your veterinarian approves it. If you have a cat, our fragrance-free option is the sensible default.
- Lavender and tea tree. NIEHS states that “chemicals in lavender oil and tea tree oil are potential endocrine disruptors,” citing research associating persistent exposure to lavender oil products with premature breast development in girls and abnormal breast development in boys. “Natural” is not a synonym for “inert.” We would rather you heard that from us.

Can cleaning sprays really damage my lungs?
One large study is worth knowing about. Svanes and colleagues (American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2018) followed roughly 6,000 adults for about 20 years and found that women responsible for cleaning at home lost FEV1 faster (-22.1 mL/yr) than women not engaged in cleaning (-18.5 mL/yr), as did occupational cleaners (-22.4 mL/yr). The authors found no significant association in men, and no significant association with FEV1/FVC decline or airway obstruction. That is a real, measured difference, but it is a modest one and it is an association in an observational cohort, not proof that any one product caused it.
Do natural cleaners disinfect?
