A cleaner can be 10% plant-derived, 90% conventional synthetic chemistry, and still legally call itself plant-based.

A cleaner with plant-based surfactants plus a fully disclosed ingredient list is doing both halves of the job. One with plant-based surfactants and an opaque “fragrance” and “preservative” at the end of the label is doing half.
The Truth: “Plant-Based” Is Unregulated, So the Label Alone Tells You Almost Nothing

“Plant-based,” “natural,” “green,” and “non-toxic” are marketing terms with no binding legal definition for cleaning products in the U.S. The only thing that can’t lie to you is the ingredient list.
Some brands disclose every ingredient down to the fragrance components. Others hide behind the word “fragrance,” which can legally contain dozens of undisclosed chemicals. - Can you read the full ingredient list? Not “plant-based surfactant blend.” Actual names.

Greenwashing Red Flags

- “Plant-based” with no ingredient list. The single biggest red flag. The words are the claim; the formula is the proof.
- Vague claims as the feature. “Chemical-free” is meaningless—water is a chemical. “Eco-friendly” with no specifics usually means no specifics.
- One botanical ingredient in a sea of synthetics. A drop of aloe in a conventional formula doesn’t transform it.
- Green packaging on an unchanged formula. Leaves, earth tones, the word “pure.” Design is not chemistry.
- “Fragrance” listed with zero detail. This is where phthalates and undisclosed sensitizers hide, in every category of product.
