What Is Sodium Carbonate (Washing Soda)?

In plain English: Sodium carbonate, or washing soda, is a strongly alkaline mineral salt used as a detergent booster and water softener. It raises a wash's pH to cut grease and binds the calcium and magnesium in hard water so detergent works better.

Also listed as: washing soda, soda ash, soda crystals, Na2CO3

The honest science

Washing soda is sodium carbonate, a close cousin of baking soda but much more alkaline, roughly pH 11 in solution 1. That high pH is what makes it a strong grease-cutter and a common "builder" in powdered laundry and cleaning products.

As a builder it does two things. It softens water by sequestering the calcium and magnesium ions that otherwise waste detergent and form soap scum, and it buffers the wash to keep the pH high so surfactants can lift oily soils efficiently 1. In powdered detergents it's often a large share of the formula.

The trade-off is that it's noticeably harsher than baking soda. It's caustic enough to irritate skin and eyes, so gloves are sensible, and its alkalinity can damage aluminum, some painted or waxed finishes, fiberglass and delicate fabrics like wool and silk 1. It isn't a persistent-pollutant or bioaccumulation concern the way synthetic chelators can be, but it is a real irritant, so it's a case where "natural mineral" still means handle with care. Keep it away from children and rinse treated surfaces.

Where you'll find it

  • powdered laundry detergents
  • detergent boosters and stain pretreats
  • heavy-duty degreasers
  • dishwasher detergents

The safer-swap angle: Washing soda is a mineral-based alternative to synthetic builders like phosphates and EDTA, softening water without persistent pollutants. It's effective and biodegradable, but it's an irritant, so gloves and good rinsing matter, especially with kids around.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between washing soda and baking soda?

Chemistry and strength. Washing soda (sodium carbonate) is far more alkaline and caustic; baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is mild and food-grade. Washing soda softens water and boosts detergent; baking soda gently scrubs and deodorizes. They aren't interchangeable.

Is washing soda safe to handle?

It's low in toxicity but genuinely caustic. Wear gloves, avoid breathing the dust, keep it away from eyes and children, and don't use it on aluminum, waxed floors, fiberglass, wool or silk. Rinse well after cleaning.

Is sodium carbonate an eco-friendly water softener?

Compared with phosphates or slow-degrading synthetic chelators, yes, it softens water without those persistent-pollutant concerns. The honest caveat is that its high alkalinity can be hard on skin and some surfaces, so it's safer for the environment than for bare hands.
